Quo is a small coffee roastery in the old customs house next to the guest harbour in Skärhamn, on the island of Tjörn on Sweden’s west coast. The roastery opens onto the marina, and its coffee bar serves cups to drink there alongside bags and brewing equipment to take home. The coffee is roasted on a Loring S15 Falcon. The name comes from the Latin “status quo”, read as “to give or receive for something given in return”, and Quo sets out to challenge the status quo of the commercial and specialty coffee industry. The colours of its design are taken from the Bohuslän coast and its architecture.
Quo was one of the first partners of the importer Belco in “Fresh Coffee, Clean Ocean”, which ships coffee to Europe by sail; its Serra do Caracol Espresso, from Leonardo and Paulo Teixeira in São Paulo, makes that crossing. It has bought from Yobani Ramos and Yaved Guarnizo of Finca la Fuente in Huila for a decade, and its Colombian Christmas coffee is the first harvest from their son Juan Pablo, who has taken over part of the farm as Finca la Reserva. Quo has also worked with Sandra Milena Mora and Hector Coy of Finca el Porvenir, also in Huila, for a decade.
The West Coast house coffees, numbered 01, 02 and 03, are traceable blends roasted to a more developed profile. The volume they sell lets Quo buy more from the producers it already works with and start direct purchases with single farmers in new origins. The coffees are not flavoured, are sold in 200-gram or one-kilo bags and most ship as whole beans. Quo also roasts for offices, restaurants and shops.
