Koppi Roasters was founded in Helsingborg in 2007 by Anne Lunell and Charles Nystrand, both Swedish champions in the Barista and Brewers Cup. It began as a coffee bar with its own roaster in the centre of the city. In 2016 the roasting moved to an old industrial building, and the café closed at the end of 2017 when the business turned fully to roasting. In 2007, while Anne and Charles were baristas in Oslo, espresso was poured over tonic water behind their bar after a staff party. They refined the drink, and Kaffe & Tonic was on Koppi’s menu from the café’s opening that year.

Koppi buys from farmers it has known for years in Colombia, Costa Rica, Kenya and Ethiopia, and has worked with the same producers in Costa Rica and Colombia since 2010, alongside a few importing companies. Anne buys all of the green coffee and visits the farms. The coffee is roasted light, so that each one tastes of its farm rather than of the roast, with sweetness and fruit brought forward and bitterness kept down.

Filter coffees sit beside Omni/Espresso roasts and Footprints, a seasonal espresso blend named after a Wayne Shorter composition. A monthly subscription of filter coffee or Footprints gives early access to small lots kept for subscribers, and Koppi supplies cafés and restaurants in Sweden and abroad.
