Veg Out is a vegan café on the Kamo River at Shichijo, in Kyoto’s Shimogyo ward, with a yoga studio underneath. It opened in October 2015. The kitchen uses no meat, fish, eggs, dairy or any other animal food, and cooks mainly with natural-farmed and organic vegetables and grains, without additives or chemical seasonings.
The day runs from breakfast to café time. Mornings bring sourdough tartines with hummus and grilled seasonal vegetables, a tempeh BLT and avocado toast. Lunch centres on the Veg Out Plate of vegetables and grains grown around Kyoto, a Buddha bowl with soy-meat karaage, taco rice and a tomato and coconut curry. Natural wine and craft beer are on the list too.
Coffee has its own counter, Veg Out COFFEE -section-, set up so that people can drink good coffee every day. It serves a coffee of the day, hand drip and iced coffee, and espresso, americano, lattes and mocha made with Bonsoy, with oat milk as the alternative. The drinks list adds turmeric latte, chai and matcha latte.
