bistro deppat is a fully vegan all-day breakfast and lunch bistro in the Karmeliterviertel, in Vienna’s Leopoldstadt. bistro deppat sets out to help build a “klimafitte Gesellschaft” through a broad, low-threshold offer of vegan food, and the emphasis is on everyday dishes, “only vegan”. The idea is that a vegan can order a classic Viennese breakfast without reading the ingredients list: savoury waffles, Kipferl and croissants included, the things that are usually missing from other breakfast menus in their vegan form.

Rupert Tömböl finished his cooking apprenticeship in 2017, cooked full time for two years, went back to university to study mathematics and physics for teaching, and opened the bistro in 2024 on his own terms. As much as possible is made in house: the hand-rolled Semmeln, the croissants and the Kipferl, a ginger and tonka bean lemonade, the iced tea and a coffee liqueur. What is bought in is named: goldblatt Karree as the ham alternative and bacon from billie green. The menu runs from a hummus breakfast and bagels with almond ricotta to a vegan scrambled egg made from field-bean protein, a croque madame, waffles, nougat dumplings with Zotter nougat and Kaiserschmarrn.

The coffee is roasted by Caffè Couture and comes as espresso, Verlängerter, cortado, cappuccino, flat white, latte macchiato and dirty chai, each also decaffeinated or iced, with oat, soy, almond or coconut drink. The teas come from Die Teerose, and the matcha latte uses Japanese organic Ujita matcha. Dogs are welcome; the entrance has three steps and there are no step-free toilets. In the evening the bistro, which seats up to 35, can be hired for parties with cocktails, a buffet, karaoke and decorations.

bistro deppat has a little sister, bistro narrisch, a coffee bar in Alsergrund for specialty coffee and vegan snacks.
