Java Roastery has roasted and served coffee in Birmingham since 2005, when it opened as Java Lounge in Moseley Village. A second coffeehouse followed in 2015 in a Grade I listed Arts and Crafts building from 1900 in the heart of the city’s commercial district. In 2017 the team designed and built a coffeehouse at Blythe Valley Business Park in Solihull, and a fourth sits in the Jewellery Quarter.

In 2019 the business set out to rethink the coffeehouse for 21st-century living. The result was a new name, Java Roastery, and a manifesto, “coffee 3.0”, for coffeehouses designed as places to read, work, meet and relax, with events built around music, literature and ideas.

The two house blends are Siena, of Central and South American coffees and Mocha beans, roasted medium-dark and intended for espresso, and Rilio, of coffees from South America, Asia and Africa, intended for lattes. Single origins rotate through the year with the harvests, and recent lots include Colombian coffees fermented with strawberries, watermelon or kiwi. The roasting team includes a Q grader. Java also runs a coffee school with barista, latte art and brewing courses, roasts white-label coffee for other businesses, and shows espresso machines and grinders in its own showroom.
