Industry Beans was founded by brothers Trevor and Steve Simmons, who opened the original site in Fitzroy in 2013 as a coffee roastery, café and brew bar under one roof. The roasting dates to 2010, and Industry Beans is now Australia’s largest independent specialty coffee roaster, with seven venues across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Each café is designed with its local community in mind, so no two are the same.
Fitzroy remains the head office, in a converted warehouse where the company’s largest roastery sits beside a café, a coffee bar, a retail shop and a training facility. The seasonal brunch menu runs from an avocado smash to the Porcini Nest, and the drinks list includes the Bubble Coffee, made with cold brew concentrate and coffee-soaked tapioca pearls. In the city, the Lt Collins coffee shop opened in 2017 as a takeaway concept with espresso, filter and an express brunch menu. Chadstone, outside the shopping centre’s luxury entrance, brings a café, a roastery and a retail shop together and serves a high tea at weekends. Fitzroy and Chadstone take bookings and host functions. Sydney has two venues, and Brisbane a city coffee shop and a café and roastery in Newstead, which gave the Newstead blend its name.
Every coffee is batch roasted to its own profile. The range covers espresso blends whose components and percentages are disclosed, a seasonal espresso blend and a seasonal filter blend that change every three months, single origins roasted separately for espresso and for filter, a sugarcane decaf from Colombia and a Reserve Collection of geshas sold in 100 g bags and roasted to order. The current retail range is listed below with the roaster’s own tasting notes.
