Market Lane Coffee was founded in 2009 by Fleur Studd and Jason Scheltus, who built their first shop and roastery at the entrance to the Prahran Market around a 5 kg Probat. Jenni Bryant joined in 2010 and became a co-owner in 2019, and the three still own the business. Market Lane is a specialty coffee roaster and retailer “dedicated to sourcing, roasting and sharing exceptional coffee in a sustainable, respectful and responsible way”, and it recertified as a B Corp in 2026.

Roasting moved to Brunswick East in 2020, where every batch is roasted on a 45 kg Probat and tasted. The roastery holds the cupping and training rooms for Market Lane’s brewing and roasting classes, sits next door to its sister company Melbourne Coffee Merchants, and has a vending machine of beans and filter papers out the front. It opens by appointment only. The price it pays producers is set by the producer rather than tied to the New York C market, it donates data to the Specialty Coffee Transaction Guide, and it contributes to World Coffee Research for every kilo it buys. Ricardo Zelaya in Guatemala has supplied it since the first year.

Every shop serves espresso and filter coffee and sells beans. Prahran Market remains the oldest and largest, renovated in 2024, with sandwiches made from the market’s produce, Wild Life Bakery pastries and a weekend mushroom burger; a second stall in the Harvest Hall followed in 2023. Three shops sit in and around the Queen Victoria Market, including one in the Mercat Cross building. Carlton is a 12 square metre terrace front room opened in January 2013, the first of the shops designed by Sarah Trotter. Mitchell House, in the art deco building of that name in the CBD, opened in December 2024, and the second CBD shop, at Portland House, is temporarily closed for renovations. Fitzroy North, opened in July 2026, has a reading room. Brunswick and South Melbourne complete the list.
