Flying Roasters is a Berlin roastery that tries to bridge social commitment and quality. Oliver Klitsch and Dr Nadine Heymann run it from a roastery in Wedding. The green coffee comes directly from the cooperatives that grow it, with no intermediaries and no coffee exchanges, bought jointly with other European roasteries in the Roasters United network. The roastery works only with small and medium-sized, democratically organised cooperatives, guarantees a minimum price of 2.90 dollars per pound of green coffee, pre-finances harvests without interest and visits each cooperative once a year. The whole range has carried organic certification since 2016, and a transparency report appears once a year.
The first café opened in 2018 across the street from the roastery. A second café followed in Kreuzberg at the end of September 2025. Both serve the roastery’s coffee as espresso drinks, V60 and French press, with changing coffees on the grinder, cake and pastries, lemonades, tea and matcha. Each has a shelf with the full range at online-shop prices and a small shelf of coffee books the roasters recommend, in German and English. Cash and cards are accepted.
Courses run at the roastery and in the cafés: barista, latte art, roasting and sensory courses, a roastery tour, a filter tasting called Taste and Talk and an introduction to specialty coffee, all available as gift vouchers. The coffees are named after birds, from the Blackcap espresso blend to the Fire Finch, an Ethiopian natural the roastery sells as an omniroast. The current retail range is listed below with the roaster’s own tasting notes.
