Laynes opened in 2011 as an espresso bar close to Leeds train station, with the aim of giving the city’s coffee drinkers “a venue that paid absolute attention to the quality of just two ingredients, coffee and (possibly) milk”. It is still independent, and barista owned and run.

The room has since grown into a kitchen known for breakfast and brunch, and the pastries and sweet bakes come from the Laynes Bakery in Armley, which specialises in viennoiserie and also supplies other venues around Leeds. Laynes now stays open into the evening with a short list of wines, beers and coffee cocktails. Tables can be booked.

The coffee for home is Red Brick, the seasonal espresso blend from Square Mile Coffee Roasters in London, sold alongside Laynes’ own NotNeutral cups and mugs and the Independent Coffee Guide for the North, Midlands and North Wales.
