Smith Street Coffee Roasters was founded in 2014 by two brothers, Trev, a barista and roaster, and Dave, a chef. They had run a tapas bar in Sheffield, and after a trip to Australia they set out to bring the Melbourne style of coffee home: they sold the bar, bought a Giesen roaster and named the business after Smith Street in Collingwood.

The roasting stays light to medium, to let the provenance of each coffee show, and the green coffee comes from the current season’s crop. The core range runs from Dark Peak, a Brazil and Ethiopia espresso blend with Great Taste awards in five years, to White Peak and The Don, a seasonal espresso that changes four times a year. Single origins rotate often, and the Funk Delicious range covers anaerobic and other fermented lots. The Christmas blend gives a pound from every kilo sold to Emmaus Sheffield, which supports people at risk of homelessness.

The coffee shop sits inside the roastery at Hope Works. It has several options on espresso, a daily batch brew, V60s of any coffee in the range and nitro coffee, alongside cake, brewing gear and the full range of beans, ground to order. From April to December, Saturday Sessions open the shop on the second Saturday of the month with samples of the newest coffees and pastries from rotating local bakers. The team also teaches Professional Barista and Brewing Better Coffee At Home courses.
