Copenhagen has a World Barista Champion among the founders of Coffee Collective and a Greek Coffee Roasting Champion behind an espresso bar in Nørrebro. Twelve of the fourteen roast their own coffee, in a former machine factory in Frederiksberg, in the old brewery district of Carlsberg Byen, in Nordhavn, Nørrebro, Valby and Sydhavn, among other places. Some roast each coffee once for every brew method, others roast separately for espresso and filter. They run from Coffee Collective, La Cabra, April and Prolog to a nano-roastery, cafés in railway station buildings, a chain born in Amager and a corner café that pours other people’s coffee.
Coffee Collective, Frederiksberg, Torvehallerne and Nørrebro
Coffee Collective was founded in 2007 by Peter N. Dupont, Casper Engel Rasmussen and Klaus Thomsen, a World Barista Champion, and is still owned by them. It trades directly with coffee farmers, pays prices far above market level, and all of its wholesale coffee is directly traded. The coffee is roasted every day at the headquarters in Frederiksberg, a former machine factory where the café looks straight into the roastery. The other bars each have their own design: an elm and granite bar with a map of the coffees’ origins in the Torvehallerne food market, a former tavern with a glass-covered courtyard at Bernikow in the centre, six-metre windows in Carlsberg Byen, and clay walls with 100-year-old Flensburg bricks on Sankt Hans Torv in Nørrebro. Trianglen faces the park in Østerbro. Collective Bakery opened in Nørrebro in 2021 and bakes the pastries for every shop.
La Cabra, Nordhavn and the centre
La Cabra started in Aarhus in 2011, began roasting in 2013 and now roasts in Nordhavn, in a roastery whose brick floors, seats and bar recall the area’s port past. The building is split into a coffee bar, the production and a quality control room. Each coffee gets a single roast profile, chosen at the cupping table to show its character and never aimed at filter or espresso, and La Cabra values clean, bright cups with clear flavour notes. In the centre there is a café inside the Another Aspect store in the fashion district. Tables are not reserved. Abroad La Cabra runs cafés and bakeries in New York, Madrid, Muscat and Bangkok.
April Coffee Roasters, the April Store
April started roasting in Copenhagen in 2016 and now roasts in Solrød. It buys through direct trade with farmer-led pricing and goes back to the same farms, among them Gesha Village, Hacienda La Esmeralda and Kamavindi. The April Store in central Copenhagen is the company’s home, where the coffees, the April Brewer, the April 01 hand grinder and other projects come together, with a menu that changes with the coffees arriving from its Partner Farmers. Next door, the SP Coffee Shop serves a wider range of coffees from the same producers, roasted with more development for sweetness and balance, as espresso, filter and milk drinks.
Prolog Coffee, the Meatpacking District and Papirøen
Prolog Coffee opened in 2016. Jonas Gehl is its CEO and co-founder, and it became a certified B Corporation in 2022. Every coffee is roasted to a single omni profile for both espresso and filter, on the view that modern machines and grinders no longer need a separate espresso roast, and Prolog lists the FOB price it paid for each green coffee in a yearly transparency table. Its main milk supplier is Søtofte Gårdmejeri, a small farm with about 50 cows. There are four Prolog coffee bars: in the Meatpacking District in Vesterbro, in Østerbro, in Frederiksberg and on Papirøen in Christianshavn. Prolog also teaches coffee courses for home brewers.
Andersen & Maillard, Nørrebro, Nordhavn and the centre

Andersen & Maillard is a coffee roastery and bakery. Its coffee shop and roastery in Nørrebro opened in 2018 and the artisan bakery in Nordhavn in 2019, and there is a coffee shop and bakery in the city centre. Its day starts at 3am, “to make sure yours begins the way it should - with the perfect coffee and croissant”. Most coffees are sold under their growers’ names: Jairo Arcila and Luz Helena Salazar in Quindío, Colombia, Raquel Ribeiro Aguiar at Fazenda Cerrado Grande in Brazil and Sigfredo Corado at Finca Los Angeles in El Salvador are among them.
Norange, Sankt Hans Torv

Norange is the espresso bar of Alex Nerantzis, who launched the coffee company Cafetierra on Corfu in 2007, became Greek Coffee Roasting Champion in 2022 and placed fourth at the World Coffee Roasting Championship in Milan. The bar is on Sankt Hans Torv in Nørrebro. Its roasting style is inspired by Nordic coffee culture, and it uses separate espresso and filter profiles. It roasts on a Loring S15 Falcon at The Coffee Roasting Company on Refshaleøen while it works towards a roastery of its own.
Saftig Kaffe, Nørrebro
Saftig Kaffe is a nano-roastery started in 2024 by Jonas and Magnus. Since the summer of 2025 it has had a small, “living room-esque” espresso and brew bar in Nørrebro, where the two roast, brew and play vinyl records. Its tagline is “juiciest of them all”, and it works with expressive light roasts, unique micro-lots and signature processing methods, with lots from returning relationships such as the Dukamo family in Sidama. Filter is brewed on the Orea O1, a flat-bottom brewer. Saftig also supplies cafés, among them Kaf a few streets away.
Pontes Coffee, Valby
Pontes Coffee is a micro-roastery and specialty coffee bar in Valby, where the coffee is roasted in small batches on site. Pontes is Portuguese for bridges: the couple behind it, one from Santa Cruz in California and the other from Copenhagen, met nearly a decade ago and took the name from Portugal. Falstaff named it the best new specialty coffee opening in Denmark, and it was the winning specialty café in Denmark at the European Coffee Trip Awards 2026. The coffees carry names of their own, such as Hidden Hour, a natural Catuai from Finca El Puente in Honduras, and most of them are roasted for filter.
Impact Roasters, Valby, Carlsberg Byen and Amager

Impact Roasters was founded in 2015 by Daniel Halalla, who grew up in Ethiopia roasting beans with his mother, and his wife Nidzara Fazlic. It buys coffee directly from small-scale farmers in Ethiopia, adds a few from Kenya, and puts part of its profit into community projects such as school materials and water stations, under a model it developed after finding that Fairtrade did not suit farms that small. Its first roastery opened in 2017 in the Langgade station building in Valby, and there are cafés in Valby Station, at Flintholm Station, in Carlsberg Byen and in Amager. The Amager café is part of the Impact Roasters Cooperative, which creates opportunities for African women in Denmark. Groups can book an Ethiopian coffee ceremony.
Riccos, Vesterbro and across the city
Riccos began with a coffee bar in Vesterbro more than twenty years ago. Ricco, its roaster, roasted his first beans in a frying pan over an open fire and still roasts every week the beans that are drunk in the bars: three single origins from Costa Rica, Ethiopia and Guatemala and Black Death, the espresso blend made from all three. The bars are spread across Copenhagen, from Vesterbro, Nørrebro and Valby to Sydhavnen, Brønshøj, the Natural History Museum of Denmark and the telephone kiosk on Christianshavns Torv. The surcharge on disposable cups goes to tree planting at El Olmo, the farm in Mexico that Riccos runs with Cofoco Food.
Original Coffee, Carlsberg Byen and Tivoli

Original Coffee started in 2010 as five coffee bikes called Rolling Coffee, run by the childhood friends Nikolaj and Philip, and opened its first coffee shop on top of the Illum department store. There are now 21 coffee shops across the city, from a 12.5 square metre counter in Torvehallerne to a Vesterbro room with an old pharmacy ceiling, plus three bars in Tivoli. The coffee is roasted at Bag Elefanterne, “Behind the Elephants”, in Carlsberg Byen, a roastery and coffee shop under one roof, on a Loring Kestrel 35 kg. Beans that the colour sorter takes out go into Resource Blend, sold at a lower price. Original Coffee’s own bakery, in a converted butcher’s shop in Kødbyen, supplies every shop.
Copenhagen Coffee Lab, Amager

Copenhagen Coffee Lab was born in Amager, in a shop that once held its roastery and is now its flagship. Two of its four founders built the roastery and two are former master bakers, and the cafés serve sourdough bread and pastries from its own bakeries alongside coffee roasted every day on a Loring S70 Peregrine in Sydhavn. In Copenhagen there are cafés in Amager, Østerbro and Frederiksberg and two at the airport. The rest of the chain is abroad, in Hamburg, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Essen, Duisburg, Lisbon and on the Côte d’Azur.
Kaf, Nørrebro
Kaf is a fully plant-based bakery and coffee shop in Nørrebro, with seats under the oak trees outside. The patisserie is built on natural fermentation, with sourdough pastries baked every day and changed with the season, and its line is “comfort food ahead of its time”. It does not roast: the coffee comes from Saftig Kaffe, with filter and batch brew on the bar.
Darcy’s, Nørrebro and Refshaleøen

Darcy’s is a corner café in Nørrebro that pours coffees from roasters around the world and brews filter on the V60. Its menu is baked goods and seasonal treats, and tables can be reserved. The second café, Darcy’s & CC, is inside the Copenhagen Contemporary art centre on Refshaleøen, with “one of the longest tables you’ll ever see”, seasonal lunch dishes and beer on tap from Åben. A monthly coffee club sends out coffees from its favourite roasters.
What you need to know about Copenhagen specialty coffee
Which Copenhagen coffee shops roast their own coffee? Twelve of the fourteen. Coffee Collective roasts in Frederiksberg, La Cabra in Nordhavn, April in Solrød, Original Coffee in Carlsberg Byen, Copenhagen Coffee Lab in Sydhavn and Norange at The Coffee Roasting Company on Refshaleøen. Andersen & Maillard, Saftig, Pontes, Impact Roasters, Riccos and Prolog roast their own too. Kaf serves Saftig, and Darcy’s pours roasters from around the world.
Do Copenhagen roasters roast separately for espresso and filter? It varies. Prolog roasts every coffee to one omni profile and La Cabra gives each coffee a single profile chosen at the cupping table. Norange uses separate espresso and filter profiles, and Copenhagen Coffee Lab and Original Coffee sell separate espresso and filter coffees.
Where can you see the coffee being roasted? Guests at the Coffee Collective café in Frederiksberg can see straight into the roastery, and at Original Coffee’s Bag Elefanterne in Carlsberg Byen they watch the beans being roasted.
Which coffee shops have their own bakery? Collective Bakery in Nørrebro bakes for every Coffee Collective shop, Andersen & Maillard has a bakery in Nordhavn and a coffee shop and bakery in the centre, Original Coffee bakes in Kødbyen, Copenhagen Coffee Lab bakes sourdough for its cafés, and Kaf is a plant-based sourdough bakery.
Can you book a table? La Cabra does not reserve tables. Darcy’s takes reservations in Nørrebro, and parties of more than ten can book at Darcy’s & CC. Impact Roasters’ Langgade café can be hired for events.
Where is the coffee outside the centre? Valby has Pontes and two Impact Roasters cafés, with a third at Flintholm Station in Frederiksberg. Original Coffee has a shop in Hellerup and three in Nordhavn, Copenhagen Coffee Lab has two cafés at the airport, and Riccos has bars on the DTU campuses in Hørsholm and Kongens Lyngby.
