Fjord Coffee Roasters was founded in Berlin in 2016 by Kresten Thøgersen, Morgan Love and James Maguire, who owned hospitality venues across the city and wanted a supplier of quality roasted coffee with close, long-lasting partner relationships. Its mission is to uncover the rarest and most unique flavours in coffee, summed up as “We seek the rare and exotic”. The most brilliant flavours are produced on farms and at processing stations, so the roaster’s job is to honour that work and draw it out.
The roastery and production are in Marzahn, in the east of Berlin, and are not open to the public except by appointment. Fjord roasts on a cast-iron 12 kg Probat fitted with variable frequency drives for airflow and drum speed, with filter roasts of six to eight minutes dropped shortly after first crack, espresso roasts of nine to eleven minutes with a longer development, and a Lighttells colour meter to keep each coffee within a set window. Most single origins are sold as separate filter and espresso roasts, all as whole beans.
It holds direct trade relationships with producers in Brazil, El Salvador and Colombia and sources from other countries through the year. Alongside the single origins there is a House Blend espresso, a monthly taster box, subscriptions for homes and offices, and a wholesale programme for cafés across Europe, with three roast days a week. Silo Coffee in Friedrichshain, the home of Fjord, serves the coffee. The current retail range is listed below with the roaster’s own tasting notes.
