Brooklyn Roasting Company was founded in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in 2009 to give New York sustainably sourced coffees “presented to consumers unpretentiously”. It supplies hundreds of wholesale accounts across the five boroughs and runs three cafés in Brooklyn.
Production is based in Building 123 of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a power plant built in 1899 on the East River waterfront, with sixty-foot ceilings and brick walls two feet thick. The building is LEED-certified. The coffee is roasted there on Loring Peregrine and Kestrel roasters and packed in tin steel cans, wholesale deliveries go out in recyclable totes, and 90% of the coffees are Fair Trade certified. The roastery also hosts private tours, group cuppings and events by arrangement.
Its philosophy is “serious but not snobby, practical not pretentious, accessible not exclusive”. It supports local institutions such as the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Brooklyn Museum and the New York Public Library. The Japan Blend marks ten years of work with its Japanese partners, the Tokyo Blend was made with its Japanese roasting team, and the Brompton Blend with Brompton Bicycles.
The range covers single origins from Central and South America, Ethiopia and Sumatra, a Peruvian decaf, the Iris and BQE espressos, and blends including Java Mocha, its original blend from 2009.
