Joe Coffee began in 2003 in a former dry cleaner’s on a corner of the West Village, where Jonathan Rubinstein, Gabby Rubinstein and their parents Richard and Alice opened the doors that summer. Jonathan’s vision was to brew delicious coffee and serve it to the neighbourhood with warm hospitality. The first café still has its small patio with two benches and a handful of seats inside, and regulars who have watched children grow up in it and come back with children of their own. Two decades later, “New York’s hometown specialty coffee company” has more than 20 cafés in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.

The coffee is roasted at Joe’s own roastery in Long Island City, where the team cups samples of every coffee it roasts through the week, and at least 80% of it comes from Rainforest Alliance certified producers. The Long Island City roastery café and the Pro Shop in Chelsea are the two Joe locations with a constant rotation of guest roasters beside Joe’s own coffees, and both sell home espresso and drip equipment; the Pro Shop is also the base for the catering and tech teams, which handle more than 1,700 events across the city each year. Joe runs public classes and professional certification, a Café Feminista programme of coffees from women producers, and sells its coffee, cold brew and specialty instant online. The holiday coffee, Rockefeller, returns every winter.

In Manhattan the cafés run from the West Village, Union Square and the Flatiron District, where the newest is a walk-up window, through Chelsea, Bryant Park and two counters in Grand Central Terminal to the Upper West Side, the World Trade Center and Columbia Business School. In Brooklyn there are cafés in Brooklyn Heights, the first Joe in the borough, in Dumbo and near the Barclays Center, and in Queens the roastery café and a café inside the TWA Hotel at JFK. Menus are translated into French, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese.
