Black Fox Coffee was born out of a single desire, a better café experience. Founders Daniel Murphy and Gary Hardwick, dissatisfied with their daily coffee options, set out in 2016 to create full-service cafés, espresso bars and a roastery with a mission to make remarkably good coffee experiences accessible to all. The rooms are designed in homage to the European espresso bar, built around conversation, engagement and community as neighbourhood meeting places.
Black Fox is one of the few multi-roasters in New York City. It sources and curates coffees from leading roasters around the world and serves them beside its own, so the shelf mixes bags from Square Mile in London, Obadiah in Edinburgh, Monogram in Calgary and Sweven with Black Fox’s own lots from Kenya, Ethiopia, Colombia and Guatemala. The house coffee, All Day, is a community lot from Huila in Colombia bought three or four times a year to follow the harvest and offered in place of a house blend, which Black Fox counts as one of its ways of buying sustainably; it is the espresso in the shops. A Guatemalan lot from Tony Medina’s Finca La Colina has been on the list every year since 2021, and the Black Fox Coffee Club sends the current coffees to subscribers.
The flagship is at 70 Pine in the Financial District, with a café in Midtown East, a garden kiosk at 550 Madison and a café inside the Pendry hotel at Manhattan West, plus one in Austin, Texas. The shops sell brew gear, caps, totes and tees, and the cafés take online orders for pickup and delivery.
