D·Origen’s founder, Miguel, left a multinational in 2009 after it was sold and spent a year in Nicaragua on social projects; in 2010 his family bought a coffee farm in Panama, Barú Black Mountain, in Altos del Colorado on the slopes of the Barú volcano, and learned to harvest and process alongside the Ngäbe families who worked it. The first coffee shop opened in El Albir, on the Alicante coast, in 2012. The family still farms in Panama, now at Finca Santa Teresa in the cloud forest beside La Amistad National Park, where it grows new varieties and develops microlots.
The company roasts its own coffee, on the principle that it tastes better when you know what growing it costs. The online shop lists single origins, blends, a Rare Edition and a decaf, and each coffee is sold with its origin, altitude, process and variety alongside the roaster’s cup description. D·Origen roasts every coffee as an omniroast, roasts daily, holds an EU organic certificate and runs an academy with barista and latte art courses. It also sells a monthly subscription and brewing equipment.
D·Origen Casa Calvet is the company’s Barcelona café, on the ground floor of Casa Calvet, the apartment building Antoni Gaudí completed in 1900 in the Eixample. It is a café and a coffee shop at once: the beans served at the bar are sold in bags to take home. The menu covers breakfast, brunch and artisan pastries, the room is a place to work, meet or stop for a while, dogs are welcome and there are no reservations. The current retail range is listed below with the roaster’s own tasting notes.
