François and Carmen started SlowMov in Barcelona in 2015 after living in France, England and Poland. The name joins “slow” and “movimiento”: a belief that things can be done differently, something that moves forward and changes, but with the time each process needs. They like good, simple things, good coffee, good wine, good food and good music, without unnecessary luxury.

SlowMov roasts in Barcelona and its main business is selling coffee to hospitality and to the public. The team visits producers at origin, in Brazil, Ethiopia and Mexico among others, selects the lots and tries to keep long-term relationships with its suppliers. The range changes with the season, and the coffees are grown without chemicals even where a producer has not paid for organic certification. Each coffee is sold with its origin, process and variety, so that the people behind each bean are not taken for granted.

Specialty coffee pays producers more than commodity coffee but still carries a transport footprint, so the founders work on what they can: sales in bulk, 100% compostable packaging since 2018, and a campaign for customers to bring their own cup, “Reuse because you can’t recycle the planet”. The shop in Gràcia also distributes coffee machines, writes drinks menus and recipes for other businesses, and runs the Escola de Cafè with espresso, latte art and sensory workshops for professionals and beginners. A monthly subscription lets customers choose espresso or filter, whole or ground. The current retail range is listed below with the roaster’s own tasting notes.
