Saint-Jean is a plant-based bakery in the Jordaan, one of Amsterdam’s oldest neighbourhoods. Its founder, Yann Pierre-Jean, was shaped by his family’s baking traditions, and the bakery’s debut book, Saint-Jean: A Heritage of Baking, tells that story alongside the recipes behind its patisserie. Everything baked here is plant-based: classic and cinnamon croissants, pains suisses, Danishes, a vanilla flan, pistachio cruffins filled with a house-made pistachio paste, sourdough loaves and celebration cakes such as a Black Forest and a lemon, poppy seed and basil. The bakery keeps some of the building’s architectural details inside a contemporary interior, with artworks by Studio Aware and a playlist by the sound designer and producer DJ Elisa Batti.

The bakery offers a wide range of coffees from Dak. The drinks run from espresso, Americano, batch brew filter and hand brew filter to cortado, cappuccino, flat white and a latte served hot or iced, and every milk drink is made with plant-based milk only. For tea drinkers there are matcha and chai lattes and loose leaf tea, and the matcha and a light roast hojicha, both from Kagoshima and sourced for Saint-Jean, are sold by the tin, beside a Reclaem barista cacao in a Saint-Jean tin.

The deli sits just across from the bakery and handles savoury baking, sandwiches, natural wine and home goods, with coffee too. Pastries can be ordered online for next-day pickup. Dak Coffee Roasters roasts the coffee Saint-Jean serves.
