SUBCULT is a neighbourhood bar in Amsterdam Noord: “an extension of your living room, but with a fridge that’s never empty, and with friends that never leave”. Its line is “strong brews + vegan chews”, and everything on the menu, from the coffee to the cocktails, is plant-based. The manifesto runs from “Come in to fit in” and “Play loud music” to “Don’t eat if it has a beat”. The room has black walls, art, plants and a fridge covered in stickers beside the espresso machine.
The coffee is from Friedhats. The list covers espresso, Americano, macchiato, cortado, cappuccino, latte and flat white, filter by the single cup or by the pot, decaf and iced versions, and matcha, chai and hot chocolate, with dirty chai and dirty hot chocolate. Milk drinks are made with plant-based milk only, and the oat milk comes from Zuivelrijck. There are Japanese single-origin loose-leaf teas and herbal infusions from By Trinitea.
The kitchen bakes in house and serves toasted sourdough from Hotel de Goudfazant, jackfruit croquettes, kimchi toasties made with Damchi kimchi, seasonal pickles and ferments, and a shepherd’s pie with vegan mince. Beers on tap and in bottles, natural wines and cocktails such as a Bloody Mary made with kimchi make up the rest of the menu. Friedhats roasts the coffee SUBCULT serves.
