Redemption Roasters was born in October 2016, when the Ministry of Justice approached founders Ted and Max, who had run the wholesale coffee company Catimor since 2015, about setting up a roastery inside a prison to train residents and reduce reoffending. The roaster was installed at HMYOI Aylesbury in April 2017, and the first shop opened on Lamb’s Conduit Street in Bloomsbury that July, with the team working out of the basement beneath it. The mission has not changed: to reduce reoffending through coffee.

Roasting moved inside HMP The Mount in March 2020, on a Loring roaster, and from December 2025 all its coffee is roasted at a new roastery in North Wembley, where it employs prison leavers and runs monthly wholesale training courses. Barista academies operate inside HMP High Down, HMP Wandsworth, HMP Downview and HMP Wormwood Scrubs, with a community academy at the King’s Cross HQ, and graduates are placed in the company’s shops with ongoing caseworker support. In August 2026, 34% of its shop workforce were Participants, with a known reoffending rate of 1.8% against a national average of 38%.

There are eleven shops across London. Bloomsbury seats 23 upstairs and 35 downstairs and serves espresso and batch filter with cakes, pastries and Focaccia Mia sandwiches. Covent Garden on Drury Lane has a pour-over brew bar and a brunch menu, Islington is the largest shop and has a back garden, Dulwich Village has a sunlit garden, and Broadgate and Victoria Station are kiosks for coffee on the go. Dogs are welcome at every venue. Sourcing follows the mission: 89% of the coffee it contracted in 2025 supported producer rehabilitation, sustainability projects through Caravela and Raw Material, or female producers, and its best-selling blend The Block was created with Brazilian producer Patricia Coelho. The current retail range is listed below with the roaster’s own tasting notes.
