Caravan started with three friends, Laura, Miles and Chris, who met working in restaurants in New Zealand. After moving to London they set out to bring food inspired by their travels and freshly roasted coffee together under one roof. The first Caravan opened on Exmouth Market in early 2010, and the HOUSE espresso blend has been its signature since it opened and began roasting that year. Caravan is a certified B Corp.

The restaurants serve an all-day menu for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, with Caravan coffee throughout. There are restaurants at Exmouth Market, King’s Cross, London Bridge, Canary Wharf, the City, Covent Garden and Fitzrovia, Vardo in Chelsea and one in Manchester, with a Southbank restaurant coming soon. Private dining and events run across the group.

The roastery is at Lambworks in north London, and its on-site café is the Lambworks Roastery Brewbar. The Caravan Coffee School is there too, with roastery tours and tastings, home filter and home espresso classes, milk and latte art classes and SCA barista courses. A second brewbar, Caravan Euston Road, is near Euston.

Caravan buys through long-term relationships with the people who grow its coffee. Its women producer programme pledges to source at least half of its coffee from women-led farms and to invest a further 10p for every kilo of their coffee sold in initiatives run by women at origin. The range covers the DAILY and HOUSE blends, VISTA, a filter blend of coffees from women-owned farms, a sugarcane decaf from Cauca and a changing list of single lots, many bought with partners such as Minga Coffee in Huila and Ensambles in Mexico.
