Rosslyn Coffee, the City of London

Rosslyn was established in 2018 by Mat Russell and James Hennebry, from Australia and Ireland, as a collection of high-volume specialty coffee shops in the City of London. The result is the standards and attention to detail of the Australian café combined with the warmth of the Irish pub, summed up as “we are nice to people and we make great coffee”. The name comes from Rosslyn Street in West Melbourne, where Hennebry first learned to make coffee. There are now ten shops across the Square Mile: Rosslyn Queen Victoria Street, the original, launched near the Financial Times headquarters, then London Wall, Tower 42, Royal Exchange, Leadenhall Market, Cannon Street, Fenchurch St Station, Ludgate Circus, Liverpool St Station and Cheapside.

Rosslyn does not roast. Origin Coffee Roasters in Cornwall supplies the coffee, delivered in tins, which keeps more than 32,000 coffee bags a year out of landfill; The Estate Dairy in Somerset delivers milk in reusable 20-litre buckets, Mörk makes the hot chocolate, Canton Tea the tea and Melisa Dora the handmade ceramics. Rosslyn selects seasonal coffees to suit particular drinks and sells four under its own label for home brewing: a blend roasted for milk, a single origin roasted for black, a single origin roasted for filter, and a Financial Times special edition called the Daily Scoop. The Ludgate Circus shop also keeps an off-menu list of frozen rare coffees from roasters such as Monogram, Leaves and Prodigal, served by the cup and ordered at the bar.

The company is a Living Wage employer; the 2022 Living Wage was launched at Rosslyn London Wall by the Mayor of London. Its awards include Europe’s Best Independent Café in 2022 and a Living Wage Champion Award in 2023. Origin Coffee roasts for Rosslyn.
